Additional learning needs

The school aims to secure equal curriculum and special opportunities for children with special educational needs and therefore fulfil all children’s entitlement to learning support and enabling all children to participate in the life and work of the school to the best of their abilities, whatever their needs. The school has a policy, which ensures the early identification of the child who requires more challenging activities. The school aims to work closely with parents to secure an effective partnership to support the child.

Some 20% of children are identified as having Special Educational Needs sometime during educational career. The class-teacher will help the child initially but, if the problems are not overcome, further discussions between parents, designated co-ordinator for Special Educational Needs, Mrs. N. Owen and the Headteacher will be held. Children may be referred to the Special Educational Depart if this is felt necessary. Practical support is sometimes deemed necessary for children to achieve to their fullest.

This school agrees and supports the principle of integrating children with learning difficulties into mainstream school where that is practicable. However it must be noted that any educational placement must take into account the following:

  • That the placement is for the educational benefit of the child
  • That the parents’ views and requests are considered
  • That the well-being of the other children is considered
  • That the necessary resources are used effectively
